Learn to code by getting that ass whooped!

This project is for ME to learn Javascript and to refresh my other skills (SQL, C# and more) But for NOW its for Javascript since I was too stupid to NOT learn and master it when I was doing web junk back in the early 2000’s

Core Gameplay Loop

  • Players battle an AI boss named “Professor Syntax” by correctly assembling snippets of code.
  • Challenges are pulled randomly from a MySQL database, filtered by the player’s chosen programming language and difficulty level.
  • Code is presented as a shuffled deck of clickable “cards” that must be sequenced in the correct order inside a “Battle Zone.” To condition players to READ and WRITE code easily and quickly!

Dual Combat Modes

  • Training Mode: An un-timed, strategic environment where players arrange their full line of code before pressing a “STRIKE!” button. It features partial-match validation, keeping correct cards in the battle zone while returning incorrect cards to the deck. There is STUDY IT button I added that links to w3schools javascript training guide to HELP study specifics on things.
  • Active Combat: A fast-paced survival mode governed by a 60-second “Death Clock.” Cards are validated instantly upon click step-by-step, removing the need for a submit button.

Health & Penalty Mechanics

  • Health points (HP) for both the player and the boss are tracked via PHP sessions and updated asynchronously via AJAX calls (ajax_combat.php).
  • Incorrect code submissions deal a localized 1 HP penalty to the player, encouraging experimentation without instant death.
  • Successfully sequencing a complete challenge grants a 15 HP healing bonus to the player and registers damage against the boss.

Study & Assist Systems

  • Difficulty Selector: A dropdown menu allows players to scale the challenge levels (Easy, Medium, Hard), which reloads the arena with the appropriate URL parameter.
  • “STUDY IT!” System: A dedicated help button available in Training Mode. When clicked, it pulls a random hint from an array of comma-separated database clues and automatically opens a contextual W3Schools reference page in a new tab.

Audio & Visual Feedback

Soundscapes: Background battle music is integrated with reduced volume (20%) to allow overlapping arrays of randomized hit and miss sound effects to stand out during combat.

Animations: CSS keyframe animations trigger heavy screen shakes on missed strikes, while character portraits dynamically swap between idle, attacking, and hurt states. I will change these to ACTUAL animations later on but for now they are just images.
